The beautiful aspect of a taco salad is that it is a meal in and of itself. Meat, cheese, vegetables, and the corn or flour flat bread are all combined into one delicious food item.
This is a dish that has everything you need for a protein rich nutritional meal.
The major difference between a taco salad and a regular taco is in the shape of the shell used or if a shell will be used at all.
Most taco salads are served either directly onto a plate, onto a bed of taco chips, or served in a bowl shaped shell. For this recipe I am focusing on the salad style.
Ingredients: Beef, Turkey, Chicken, or Pork Filler
I use extra lean ground beef cooked up with diced onions. Once the grease is drained you then add taco seasoning to your desired taste.
Yes, they sell taco seasoning just like they do the containers of chili seasoning if you were making chili. Simply sprinkle the taco seasoning onto your meat to match your taste preferences. It is what gives this salad its distinctive flavor.
You can also add in some diced celery, garlic or other veggies into your meat as it cooks if you would like to have a little additional zing in your salad.
Don't like red meat or want to avoid fats? Feel free to make your salad with ground pork, ground turkey, or diced chicken breast. Your choice of meat filling is the first food that you will put into your shell bowl.

These are Examples of the Taco Bowl Style Salad
The taco bowls are fun because they are not only edible but you can bake them up in the oven as well so you can melt the cheese on your salad if you want to.
You can make your own as well. Take a tortilla of your choice, cheese, tomato, avocado etc and place it into one of these convenient little bowls then bake it... voila! You have a personalized way to eat your taco salad. Kind of a build your own from the bowl up.
Taco Salad Recipe Without the Edible Bowl
Simply take the above ingredients (minus the sour cream) and combine them into a large bowl. From this point you can go in a few different directions to add your taco chips.
Quite a few people sprinkle the chips on the bottom of the plate and then put their taco salad filling on top while others put the meat mixture at the bottom and sprinkle the chips on top.
Still others like myself break the taco chips into smaller pieces and add them into the salad itself. Then everyone in the family simply dishes up the amount of salad they would like then add a dab of sour cream to the top.
