The cost of living keep rising but the paycheck stays about the same. It is times like these when every penny feels like it is being squeezed till it screams.
This is the time when simple pleasures and small luxuries become so very important. Living on a dime isn't easy and despite a current lack of extra income emotionally you still need the important little luxuries and treats that make life worth living.
Which means that it is the perfect time to wipe the stress lines off your forehead and step back to a simpler time and place. When money is tight and stress is high it is time to think of a few ways that you can just act like a kid again. Kick back and play. It won't make you any richer to forget your issues for awhile but it may help you and perhaps a few others to have a much happier day.
When Times get Tough it is the Perfect Opportunity to Play
Tough economic times can hit when you least expect them but you and your family still need to get out and enjoy life. Even more importantly you need breaks from the stress to keep you sane.
When all the little stresses seem to be piling up around you it is the perfect time to put things into perspective by just going outside to play.
People need the little luxuries of life. These are a small treat that act as a reward to make up for all the other stuff in life that aren't quite as rewarding.
These small enjoyments are amazing if we stop to savor the moment. They may not be a major luxury but they are each delightfully unique in their own right. We sometimes simply tend to forget how special they truly are.
Take Time to Stop and Smell the Flowers
The point to these little adventures is to treat them for just what they are, a delightful little luxury or experience that is completely and totally yours to enjoy. They are a little break from day to day living that can be savored for as long as possible.
When the stack of bills that get set aside each payday get a little higher it is the ideal atmosphere for depression to nestle into your life. Enjoying a special little luxury can help to prevent this.
When it is most needed in life these little adventures or expenditures are our moment of respite from an otherwise stressful time. Although they may be small they are very significant. These simple pleasures of life don’t have to cost a lot they just have to be something that you enjoy.
Enjoyment is Completely Reliant on How You Savor the Moment
Set up a Weekly Family Movie or Game Night.
Find a Free Online Tutorial, Game, or Course to Participate in.
Get Crafty or Artistic: Craft up a few Gifts for Family and Friends.
Visit a local tourist attraction.
Pack up a picnic lunch and head off to a local park to play for the day.
An ice cream cone on a hot day can be heavenly. Enjoy one.
Sit outside and spit watermelon seeds as far as you are able to.
Transform Everyday Events into Luxurious Adventures
Pick up some bubble bath, light a candle, and turn your bath into a relaxing spa-like experience. Instead of a regular evening meal have a candle lighted meal instead. Plan for a picnic at a local park, in the backyard, or on the balcony if you have one.
You may not be able to afford a gym membership but you can crank up the music and jog or dance around your house from room to room. The family pet usually loves this sort of strange behavior and will start to look forward to the daily jaunts throughout the home. It is an activity guaranteed to bring a smile to the faces of your kids and spouse. You can explain to them that they have officially driven you nuts.
Sit on a bench and watch the clouds float by. At night sit outside and watch the stars as they circle by over head. Take the time to savor every moment of these little adventures. Watch the sun rise in the morning then watch it set again in the evening.
Take pictures. Take a few minutes to listen to the birds sing.
Challenge yourself with some randomly ridiculous task ie: go out searching for a 4 leaf clover (there is one in about every 10,000 so that could occupy a little of your time). Ick.
Go for a walk. It can be wonderfully relaxing and is an excellent form of exercise and entertainment. See the expressions on the faces of passersby. Nod your head, smile, and say hi. See the emotions of children that are playing as you pass by.
Really truly feel every moment of these experiences. Take the time to enjoy the small interlude from daily living. Savor the luxury of the moment.
Think Positive be Positive - Think Happy be Happy
Little Luxuries Don't Have to Cost an Arm and a Leg
It is the experience that counts. A luxury can be something as simple as a hot cup of specialty tea or coffee at a local cafe.
An opportunity to simply sit, relax, and enjoy the flavor of your beverage while you experience the atmosphere that accompanies it.
Perhaps an ice cream and a walk around your local park is more to your fancy? For a dollar or two you can have at least an hour of entertainment from either of these two little excursions.
Pack up a picnic basket and head off to the city closest to yours to enjoy a day at one of their local parks. If it is winter fill a thermos with cocoa and head off to a local hill to experience the excitement of tobogganing. Make a snowman. Make snow angels. It is amazing how luxurious that cocoa tastes when you are cold and sip that soothing hot beverage outdoors.
Instead of taking your loved one out for an expensive restaurant meal try dining instead on a Two Dollar Tuesday deal. A lot of local restaurants offer them and it can make Tuesdays a day in the week to look forward to.
Take advantage of having the same great food from your favorite restaurant at a substantially lower price by using coupons and two for one deals.
Dine out for lunch rather than supper. Most smorgasbords are priced lower for the daytime meal than the evening one and a number of restaurants offer fantastic daytime specials. Cook up an international meal at home. Voila' and Bon Apetit'.
Community sponsored events are generally affordable activities for families on a budget. Participate.
Spend a Little Instead of a Lot
Instead of going on an expensive stress relieving shopping binge you instead enjoy a day of window shopping with a friend or family member. Then stop off at a local cafe to discuss the merchandise and people that you have seen on your trip. A brief respite or vacation from the stresses of everyday living can be rejuvenating.
Haunt out garage sales or thrift stores for little treasures that can be found at a fraction of their value. Visit your local library.
If a trip to Costa Rica or even across the state to visit your relatives isn't in your budget, then perhaps what you may have is enough money for gas to take a little trip to enjoy one of your local attractions.
Enjoying the simple pleasures of life doesn’t have to be too expensive. Sparkle up your creative imagination and downsize ideals a bit to get them to fit into your budget.
A model kit to assemble or a 1000 to 2000 piece jigsaw puzzle can be very inexpensive investments. Your partner might look at you as though you have lost your marbles but for the many hours of entertainment that these items provide these little luxuries are well worth the small price tag that they carry.
Family game night or working on a group project together will also serve to create unity within a family. It allows time for communication and discussion. It is also the ideal opportunity to bring your brilliant sense of humor out.
Go Ahead and be a Kid Again
The simplest events can be delightful if we allow them to be. Stress and other daily pressures can cloud our thinking making it difficult to simply be, to smile, laugh, and appreciate the special little moments of life.
It is often difficult to climb the ladder of success but it can also be just as difficult to step back down a little to a simpler place in time. Often we forgot how the little things were so enjoyable to us as a child.
Too often the all important little pleasures of childhood are replaced over time with other more expensive enjoyments and we simply forgot how wonderfully enjoyable those little treats were. Enjoyment can be simply a matter of taking a step back into the past.
